Bachelor of Engineering (Civil)
Luke obtained a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) from the University of Zagreb, Croatia in the mid-eighties, before going on to work in several European countries as a Site Engineer, Project Engineer and Project Manager, including a job at the United Nations.
Having honed his skills on building sites early on in his career, Luke turned his attention to engineering design roles where the practical knowledge he developed in his early years helped him understand the challenges and complexities contractors face on sites. This has in turn developed him into an excellent design engineer with great problem-solving skills.
After immigrating to New Zealand with his wife Vesna, also a Civil Engineer, they raised their son Frano who, you guessed it, became an engineer too (albeit bucking the trend and going down the mechanical engineering route).
After 30 plus years in the industry Luke’s stand out successes of his career are the building (infrastructure and construction) of 220 dwelling for refugees and displaced persons from Bosnia in Croatia in the late-nineties. And closer to home Luke has enjoyed playing a key role in shaping developments south of Auckland in Franklin in the last 22 years throughout Pukekohe, Tuakau, Waiuku, Papakura and Te Kauwhata.
Outside of work life, Luke in an active football player for Fencibles United, he enjoyed climbing mountains around the world and has a passion for collecting rare and endangered plants.

Wei is a Civil Engineer with more than 12 years’ experience. For almost a decade Wei worked in China and Africa where she was involved in a number of construction projects and land development projects.
Wei has extensive experience in civil design, contract management, cost estimating and project management.
Originally from China, Wei and her family immigrated to New Zealand a few years ago. Wei enjoys traveling around New Zealand and overseas with her husband and two young boys. She likes yoga and baking as well.
With his sights set on gaining experience on a range of different projects, Nate McIntosh joined the McKenzie & Co. team just before the COVID lockdown was enforced. He had enough time to meet the team and get up to speed on his portfolio of projects, before setting up his home office and getting stuck in.
His bachelor’s degree in engineering technology, alongside his desire to work across a breadth of projects, made Nate the perfect candidate for a Senior Design Engineer with McKenzie & Co.
Having managed the design and contract administration of serval large developments south of Auckland, it comes as no surprise his experience was one of his biggest assets.
Before settling into a desk job, Nate worked on a drill rig doing geo-tech investigations all over the country, including the motorway extensions in Hamilton and the Bay of Plenty.
“That was one of my favourite jobs, but I don’t miss the physically demanding work,” says Nate. “We often did 15-hour days.”
Nate’s recalls his most satisfying career highlight to date as when he got to see his first development project completed.
“I worked on that job from the very beginning,” says Nate. “It took four years and five project stages to complete. I got to see the development come to life from the design through to 224c.”

5 Most embarrassing moment? Trying to go over a jump with my bicycle crashing and scrapping myself up pretty good. It’s only embarrassing because I had just broken my arm the week before in a motorbike crash.
A civil engineer by trade, Don graduated from the University of Auckland with a Bachelor of Engineering with honours.
His role at McKenzie & Co. amongst other minor tasks like engineering design on land development projects, will be to press the midfield for the company football team.
You could forgive us for thinking he’d answer the question “What attracted you to the McKenzie & Co. team” with responses like “high calibre of ground-breaking projects, or quality colleagues to learn and grow from”. Instead we got “Chris Mellican’s man bun.” (Don’t get us wrong, it’s a great looking man bun).
Having previously interned at Harrison Grierson before moving into the role of full-time engineer working on commercial and residential subdivisions, he was an obvious hire.
Alongside his professional skills and his great sense of humour, it’s Don’s passion for guiding and promoting the younger generation of engineers that sets him apart.
“I want to connect with the younger generation of engineers and provide them with guidance and advice,” says Don.
“I want to ensure newly graduated engineers heading into the workforce for the first time have a good experience integrating into the paid employment.” The match that lit the flame for Don was his time spent as a member of the Young Professionals Committee with his former employers and the Auckland University Engineering Society, where they paid in beer and sausages.
Don gives this advice to young engineers at the beginning of their careers, “It was pretty scary when I first started liaising directly with clients. I found the best approach was to be honest and not pretend to know things that were out of my depth.”

With a successful land and construction surveying career already under his belt, James soon discovered a passion and talent for business management.
That hands on, in-the-field surveying experience was invaluable as James transitioned into the growth, management, and strategy side of business. Having experienced the successes of rapidly growing a business in a previous role, and overcoming the “growing pains” associated with this, it was the opportunity to apply this experience to a relatively young business that attracted James to McKenzie & Co.
“It was the people and reputation of McKenzie & Co. that first got my interest, but it was the culture and flexibility afforded to the role of business development manager that sealed the deal.” says James.
“I find building a strong foundation in a business through the creation and execution of business strategies, followed by business development gives me great satisfaction in what I do. I look forward to making a measurable different to McKenzie & Co. as they growth over the foreseeable future.”
Outside of work hours you’ll find James spending quality time with his family, having adventures and making memories with his two young children and socialising with friends and playing sports.

Surveying runs through Russell’s blood with both his father and grandfather both in the profession.
Russell is a man of huge experience and mana in his own right. After 35+ years in the industry, what Russell doesn’t know about cadastral surveying, well, it just isn’t worth knowing. Seriously.
With experience in land transfer, survey office and Maori land surveys, his real forte lies in his specialist knowledge in the area of Crown land. So sought after is Russell’s experience, clients often ask for him by name. In fact, Russell himself was one of the instrumental drivers behind the acquisition of Central Surveys, with his reputation preceding him.
As a lover of dining out and watching sports, Russell is in heaven when there is the Rugby World Cup on.

Taupo is known as one of New Zealand’s sporting meccas. Take one look at the calibre of sportspeople in our Taupo office and you can see a clear connection.
Graham, who studied Civil Engineering after leaving school, is a keen sportsman who is willing to give everything a go, but it’s his love of triathlon that keeps his wheels turning. Having dominated the New Zealand triathlon stage for more than a decade and representing New Zealand internationally more times than we can count, Graham’s 15 years as a professional triathlete have served him well. The skills he developed in coaching and managing the extreme pressures of race days has meant he is cool and calm under stress.
In 2019 Graham started a new chapter in my life, dusting off his civil engineering skills and is now enjoying working as a surveyor at the McKenzie & Co. Taupo office.
In between all this action, he’s a dedicated family man and survey assistant too.

Jay is a clever man. It didn’t take him long to jump ship from the McKenzie & Co. Auckland office to Taupo after realising the grass really is greener on the other-side of the Bombay’s.

In between all that fresh air and nature, Jay is our Taupo office resident civil engineer. With a huge variety of skills and experience, especially in project planning, supervision and estimating, GIS updating, AutoCAD design, and drafting, it’s no wonder he’s so highly valued by the McKenzie & Co family.
After gaining experience in commercial, residential, industrial and telecommunication projects, we love having Jay on the team.
